How We Work Together Toward Healing

Step 1: Schedule an Appointment

Contact our office to schedule your child’s first appointment. If you’re unsure whether child therapy is the right fit, we’ll help answer your questions and match your family with the appropriate therapist.

Step 2: Initial Parent & Child Session

Your first appointment allows your therapist to learn about your child’s history, current concerns, family dynamics, and treatment goals. Depending on your child’s age, portions of the session may include both parent and child together, as well as individual time with your child.

Step 3: Personalized Therapy

Your therapist will recommend a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs and schedule ongoing sessions while keeping parents informed and involved throughout the therapeutic process.

Psychotherapy Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, often called “talk therapy,” is a collaborative process between you and a licensed mental health professional designed to help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Through evidence-based therapeutic approaches, psychotherapy can help you manage anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, relationship challenges, and other mental health concerns while developing healthier coping skills and building long-term emotional well-being.

What types of therapy do you offer?

City Counseling provides psychotherapy for children, teens, adults, couples, families, and groups. Our specialties include LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, LGBTQ+ marriage counseling, PTSD and trauma treatment, Internal Family Systems (IFS), existential psychotherapy, HIV counseling, substance abuse counseling, child therapy, teen therapy, and relationship counseling. Every treatment plan is personalized to meet your unique goals and needs.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?

Choosing a therapist is an important decision, and we’re here to make that process easier. When you contact our office, we’ll learn more about your goals, preferences, and the challenges you’d like to address before recommending the therapist whose experience and therapeutic approach best fits your needs. Our team includes clinicians with specialized expertise across a variety of mental health concerns and therapy modalities.

What happens during my first therapy appointment?

Your first appointment is an opportunity to get to know your therapist and discuss what brought you to therapy. You’ll talk about your current concerns, personal history, goals, and any questions you have about the counseling process. Together, you’ll begin developing a treatment plan that supports your emotional well-being and long-term goals.

Do you offer in-person and virtual therapy?

Yes. City Counseling offers both in-person counseling at our Columbus office and secure telehealth appointments for many services. During scheduling, we’ll help determine which option best fits your needs, schedule, and treatment goals.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. City Counseling works with a variety of insurance providers, although accepted plans may vary depending on the therapist you see. Our administrative team can help verify your insurance benefits before your first appointment, explain your coverage, and answer questions about any out-of-pocket costs. We also offer self-pay options for clients who are not using insurance.

How often will I attend therapy?

The frequency of therapy depends on your individual goals, symptoms, and treatment plan. Many clients begin with weekly sessions and gradually transition to biweekly or monthly appointments as they make progress. Your therapist will regularly evaluate your progress and recommend a schedule that best supports your continued growth.

What mental health concerns do you treat?

Our therapists work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, grief, stress, relationship challenges, addiction, identity exploration, life transitions, parenting concerns, emotional regulation difficulties, and many other mental health concerns. We also provide specialized care for children, teens, LGBTQIA+ individuals, couples, and families.
